Stretch Marks: Causes and Treatments That Actually Work

Stretch marks are extremely common. They appear after pregnancy, growth spurts, weight changes or gym bulking, and they affect both women and men. They are harmless, but many people feel self conscious about them. The good news is that stretch marks can be made much less visible, especially when treated early.

Why stretch marks form

When skin stretches faster than it can adapt, the collagen and elastic fibres in the deeper layer tear. The skin surface stays intact, but the damage underneath shows as lines. Common triggers include:

  • Pregnancy, usually on the belly, hips and breasts
  • Rapid weight gain or weight loss
  • Growth spurts in teenagers
  • Muscle building, often on the shoulders and arms
  • Long term use of steroid creams or tablets
  • Family history, since some people are simply more prone

Red stretch marks vs white stretch marks

New stretch marks (striae rubrae) look pink, red or purple and may feel slightly raised or itchy. They still have active blood supply, so they respond best to treatment.

Old stretch marks (striae albae) look white or silvery and slightly sunken. They can still be improved, but results are slower and more modest.

On Indian skin, new marks often look dark brown rather than red.

Do creams and oils work?

Most oils and cocoa butter keep skin soft but have little effect on existing marks. Some prescription creams, especially retinoid based ones, can improve early red marks. Retinoids are not safe in pregnancy, so always ask your doctor before starting them.

Clinic treatments for stretch marks

MNRF (microneedling radiofrequency)

Fine needles deliver radiofrequency energy into the deeper skin, triggering new collagen. It is one of the safest and most effective options for Indian skin, with low pigmentation risk.

Fractional laser

Creates tiny treatment zones that stimulate remodelling. Settings must be carefully calibrated for darker skin.

PRP

Platelet rich plasma is often combined with microneedling to boost healing and collagen growth.

Chemical peels

Useful for the brown colour of new marks and for evening out skin texture. Read about chemical peels for Indian skin.

Realistic expectations

  • Most people need 4 to 6 sessions spaced about a month apart.
  • Stretch marks fade and become smoother, but rarely disappear completely.
  • Earlier treatment of red or brown marks gives the best results.
  • Sun protection helps prevent treated marks from darkening.

Can stretch marks be prevented?

Gradual weight changes, staying hydrated and moisturising growing skin during pregnancy may help, but genetics play a big role. If marks appear, start treatment early rather than waiting for them to turn white.

When to see a dermatologist

If stretch marks bother you, or if they appear suddenly without an obvious reason, book an assessment. Sudden widespread marks can occasionally point to a hormonal cause that needs checking. Visit our cosmetic dermatology clinic in Ahmedabad.

Frequently asked questions

Can stretch marks be removed completely? +

Usually not completely, but treatments like MNRF, lasers and PRP can make them much flatter, lighter and far less noticeable.

Which treatment is best for old white stretch marks? +

MNRF and fractional laser are the most effective options for older white marks, often combined with PRP. Results are gradual and need several sessions.

Is stretch mark treatment safe after pregnancy? +

Most treatments can start a few months after delivery. If you are breastfeeding, your dermatologist will choose options that are safe for you.
