MNRF Treatment: Benefits, Sessions and Results for Acne Scars

MNRF microneedling radiofrequency treatment for acne scars at a dermatology clinic

If you have acne scars, open pores or uneven texture, you have probably heard of MNRF treatment. It is one of the most popular collagen-building procedures in dermatology clinics today, and one of the safest options for Indian skin. Here is how it works and what results to expect.

What is MNRF?

MNRF stands for Microneedling Radiofrequency. Very fine, insulated needles enter the skin to a set depth and release radiofrequency energy at the tip. This creates controlled heat in the deeper skin, which tightens tissue and triggers new collagen and elastin. Because the energy is delivered below the surface, the top layer of the skin is largely protected.

How MNRF differs from regular microneedling

  • Regular microneedling creates tiny channels that stimulate healing, mainly in the upper skin.
  • MNRF adds radiofrequency heat at precise depths, so it remodels deeper scars and tightens skin more effectively.
  • The insulated needles mean less surface injury, which lowers the risk of pigmentation on Indian skin.

What MNRF treats

What happens during a session

  1. Your skin is cleansed and a numbing cream is applied for 45 to 60 minutes.
  2. The doctor selects needle depth and energy for each area of your face.
  3. The handpiece is passed over the skin. Most people feel warmth and pressure.
  4. A soothing cream and sunscreen are applied. The session takes around 30 to 45 minutes in total.

How many sessions do you need?

Most people need 4 to 6 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Skin texture starts improving after a few weeks, and results keep building for 3 to 6 months after the final session as new collagen forms.

Realistic expectations

  • Acne scars become shallower and less noticeable rather than disappearing completely.
  • Deep rolling or ice-pick scars often need subcision or TCA CROSS alongside MNRF.
  • Active acne should be controlled before scar treatment begins.

Downtime and aftercare

  • Redness and mild swelling for 1 to 3 days, sometimes tiny dots that fade quickly.
  • Avoid make up for 24 hours and gyms, saunas and swimming for 48 hours.
  • Use only a gentle cleanser, the prescribed cream and sunscreen for the first few days.
  • Restart retinoids and exfoliating acids only when your doctor advises.

Who should avoid MNRF?

MNRF is postponed during pregnancy, with active acne breakouts or infections in the area, in people prone to keloids, and in those with a pacemaker or certain implants. Your dermatologist will check this at the consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Is MNRF safe for Indian skin? +

Yes. Because the radiofrequency energy is delivered below the skin surface through insulated needles, MNRF carries a low risk of pigmentation when settings are chosen carefully by a dermatologist.

Is MNRF painful? +

A numbing cream is applied beforehand, so most people feel only warmth and pressure. Discomfort is mild and short-lived.

How long do MNRF results last? +

The new collagen formed is long-lasting. Many people choose an occasional maintenance session to keep skin texture at its best.
