Laser Tattoo Removal: Sessions, Pain, Results & Aftercare

A name you no longer want, an old design or a tattoo that simply does not feel like you any more — laser tattoo removal is now the standard way to fade or remove ink safely. Here is what to realistically expect.

How laser tattoo removal works

A Q-switched laser delivers extremely short, high-energy pulses that shatter tattoo ink into tiny particles. Over the following weeks, your immune system gradually clears those particles, so the tattoo fades between sessions.

How many sessions will you need?

Most tattoos need 6 to 10 sessions or more, spaced 6–8 weeks apart. The number depends on:

  • Ink colour: black and dark blue fade fastest; green, yellow and light colours are harder.
  • Professional vs amateur: professional tattoos are denser and often need more sessions.
  • Age of the tattoo: older tattoos usually fade faster.
  • Location: areas with good circulation, closer to the heart, clear quicker.
  • Skin type: darker skin needs carefully calibrated settings, which may mean more gentle sessions.

Does laser tattoo removal hurt?

Most people compare it to a rubber band snapping on the skin. A numbing cream is applied beforehand, and each session usually lasts only a few minutes for a small tattoo.

What happens after a session?

  • The area turns white briefly, then red and slightly swollen.
  • Mild blistering or crusting may appear for a few days — do not pick it.
  • Keep the area clean, apply the prescribed ointment, and cover it if needed.
  • Avoid sun exposure on the area; use sunscreen once healed.
  • Avoid swimming pools until the skin has fully healed.

Realistic expectations

  • Many tattoos fade completely or almost completely; some leave a faint shadow.
  • Results are gradual — the biggest changes are often seen after the first few sessions.
  • Choosing an experienced dermatologist reduces the risk of scarring and pigment changes.

Why choose a dermatologist for tattoo removal?

Laser settings must be matched to ink colour and skin type. On Indian skin, wrong settings can cause lightening or darkening of the surrounding skin. At our clinic, every session is planned and supervised by a doctor. See tattoo removal at Derma Wellness and our before & after gallery.

Laser tattoo removal on Indian skin: what is different

Melanin-rich skin absorbs laser energy along with the tattoo ink. If settings are too aggressive, the surrounding skin can become lighter (hypopigmentation) or darker (hyperpigmentation). To stay safe on Indian skin we:

  • Use the wavelength best suited to the ink colour — 1064 nm for black and dark blue, which is also the gentlest on darker skin.
  • Start with a test spot or conservative energy and increase gradually.
  • Keep sessions at least 6–8 weeks apart so the skin fully recovers.
  • Insist on strict sun protection between sessions.

Complete removal vs fading for a cover-up

Not everyone wants the tattoo gone entirely. Many patients want to lighten an old design so a tattoo artist can create a better cover-up. Fading usually needs fewer sessions than complete removal — tell your doctor your goal at the first consultation so the plan matches it.

Which tattoos are hardest to remove?

  • Coloured inks — especially green, light blue, yellow and white.
  • Dense professional tattoos with layered shading.
  • Cosmetic tattoos such as eyebrow or lip tattoos, which may contain pigments that darken with laser — these always need a test spot.
  • Tattoos on the hands, feet and ankles, where circulation is lower.
  • Previously treated tattoos where home creams or salt-scrubbing have left scars.

Session-by-session: what to expect

  • Sessions 1–2: the most dramatic change is often visible, as the loosest ink clears first.
  • Sessions 3–6: steady fading; lines become patchy and lighter.
  • Sessions 6+: stubborn deep or coloured ink is targeted. Progress slows, which is normal.

We photograph the tattoo before each session so you can see the progress clearly.

What affects the cost of laser tattoo removal?

  • The size of the tattoo — usually the biggest factor.
  • The number and colours of inks.
  • How many sessions are needed for your goal (complete removal or fading).
  • Whether a test patch is required.

After examining the tattoo, we give a transparent estimate per session and an expected number of sessions.

Dangerous alternatives to avoid

  • Tattoo removal creams — they often cause chemical burns and scarring while removing very little ink.
  • Salabrasion, acids or DIY scraping — these frequently leave permanent scars.
  • Unsupervised laser in non-medical settings — wrong settings on Indian skin can leave white or dark patches that are harder to fix than the tattoo itself.

Who should wait before laser tattoo removal?

We postpone treatment during pregnancy, if there is an infection or open wound at the site, after recent sun tanning, and with certain medicines that increase light sensitivity. People prone to keloids need extra caution. Your consultation covers all of this.

Frequently asked questions

How many sessions does laser tattoo removal take? +

Typically 6–10 or more sessions, 6–8 weeks apart. Black ink and older, amateur tattoos usually fade faster.

Is laser tattoo removal safe for Indian skin? +

Yes, when performed by an experienced dermatologist using settings calibrated for darker skin to minimise pigment changes.

Will laser tattoo removal leave a scar? +

Scarring is uncommon when the procedure is done correctly and aftercare is followed. Avoid picking blisters or crusts.

Can coloured tattoos be removed with laser? +

Many colours can be faded significantly, but green, light blue, yellow and white inks are harder to remove and may need more sessions.

How long should I wait between tattoo removal sessions? +

Usually 6–8 weeks. This gives your immune system time to clear the broken-down ink and your skin time to recover.

Can I get a new tattoo over a faded one? +

Yes. Fading an old tattoo with a few laser sessions often makes a much better cover-up possible. Wait until the skin has fully healed.
