Dark circles are one of the most common complaints we hear — and one of the most frustrating, because expensive eye creams rarely change them. The reason is simple: dark circles have different causes, and each one needs a different treatment.
The three types of dark circles
1. Pigmented dark circles
Brown discolouration of the under-eye skin. Very common in Indian skin, often running in families, and worsened by rubbing, allergies and sun exposure.
2. Structural (hollow) dark circles
A groove under the eye, called a tear trough, casts a shadow. This is about volume, not colour, which is why no cream can fix it.
3. Vascular dark circles
Thin under-eye skin lets blue-purple veins show through. They often look worse with tiredness.
Many people have a combination of two or three types.
Common triggers
- Genetics and naturally thin under-eye skin
- Eye allergies, eczema and habitual rubbing
- Poor sleep, screen strain and dehydration
- Sun exposure without eye-area protection
- Ageing-related volume loss
- Low iron or thyroid imbalance in some cases
Treatments that work — matched to the cause
For pigmented circles
Prescription depigmenting creams safe for the eye area, gentle under-eye peels and, in selected cases, carefully calibrated laser. Consistency matters: results build over 8–12 weeks.
For hollow circles
Hyaluronic acid under-eye filler softens the tear trough and removes the shadow. It must be placed conservatively by an experienced doctor — learn more in Botox vs Fillers.
For vascular circles
Treatments that improve skin thickness and quality, such as PRP and skin boosters, combined with managing allergies.
What to avoid
- Unprescribed "whitening" creams, which may contain steroids that thin the delicate under-eye skin.
- Strong DIY acids near the eyes.
- Rubbing your eyes — it is one of the biggest pigment triggers.
Simple daily habits that help
Use sunscreen and sunglasses, a gentle eye moisturiser, sleep 7–8 hours, and treat eye allergies promptly. These will not erase dark circles, but they stop them getting worse. Read our sunscreen guide.

Frequently asked questions
Can dark circles be permanently removed? +
Pigmented circles can be greatly lightened but may need maintenance. Hollow circles treated with filler last around 9–18 months. Genetic tendencies can return without care.
Do eye creams work for dark circles? +
Most cosmetic eye creams help only mildly. Prescription creams can lighten pigmentation, but no cream can fix hollow or structural dark circles.
Is under-eye filler safe? +
In experienced hands, using appropriate hyaluronic acid filler and conservative technique, it is a well-established treatment. Choose a qualified doctor.
